Save Crab Bank Flotilla

20 September 2018

The fundraising deadline is fast approaching to save Crab Bank and many in the Charleston area don't know what's happening.  Roughly $1.25 million needs to be raised by December to help save this key seabird sanctuary in Charleston Harbor.  That only amounts to about $10 from 125,000 donors to help ensure Crab Bank is restored as part of the harbor's larger dredging project.  Crab Bank has been a prime nesting spot to dozens of sea and shorebirds for decades including pelicans.  Since Hurricane Irma the area is being washed over at high tide.

Event is Sunday, September 30 | Encircle Crab Bank at 9:30 a.m.

Having a thriving rookery at the mouth of Shem Creek is great for those kayaking and paddleboarding in the area but also helps protect the shore line of the area from large wakes produced by shipping tankers coming in and out through the harbor.  Seabird populations have been in decline with a major contributing factor being loss of habitat.  We are working with other local Charleston businesses to help bring awareness to the issue. So on Sunday September 30 we're paddling out to Crab Bank to surround the bain with a flotilla of kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders.  You can bring your own, borrow a friends or rento one from the sponsoring outfitters!

We encourage meet-up groups and paddle groups to come out and join in the fun.  We are asking those interested to be out there by 9am so we can get the group in formation.  This is a family friendly event and kids are encourage to participate.  Nature Adventures will have guides in kayaks to help direct participants as well as other local outfitters.  A permit from DNR has been procured to allow for aerially photography, and Adam Boozer of LawtonMiles is donating his time to document this event.

Congressman Mark Sanford, a gues of the Coastal Conservation League, will be helpin us lead the charge to the island.

If you plan on attending with your own kayak or paddleboard please register here so we can give you the pre-paddle instructions.

Charleston Kayaking Review

I cannot say enough good about Nature Adventures! From the get go, they were extraordinarily nice. I am grateful for the constant reminders to not touch the oysters or get out of the kayak as I got stuck in an oyster bed and had to be rescued. Dana and Ben went above and beyond to rescue me and not make me feel like I was an idiot for getting stuck. 5 stars is not enough!- Diana A.
